Doctor Haider Mannan

Senior Lecturer in Biostatistics,
School of Medicine

Biography

At the Translational Health Research Institute and School of Medicine, Dr Haider Mannan (equivalent to Assoc. Prof in the US system) has three roles - research, teaching and statistical consulting. His current interest is in the evaluation of cognitive behavioural therapy and body weight loss therapy combined and compulsive exercise training therapy for eating disorders. He has a track record in the fields of chronic conditions (e.g. obesity, eating disorders, mental health, diabetes) (currently CI on 3 external grants in eating disorders and mental health worth 405K AUD and two internal grants worth 75K AUD), lifestyle factors (e.g. smoking, diet) and policy modelling of cardiovascular disease prevention (was CI on 1 NHMRC grant, 1 ARC grant worth 400K AUD). His biostatistical expertise is wide including regression models for clustered and longitudinal data, continuous, binary, time-to-event, nominal and ordinal outcomes, analysis of small studies and state transition models, in the context of epidemiological studies. He has published two monographs, and 80 peer-reviewed journal articles in epidemiology and biostatistics (six SAS macros for disease risk modelling), with 31 as first authored and 42 in Q1 journals. He has authored 9 research reports. His Google Scholar G index is 39, H and i-10 indexes are 22 and 33 and 1662 citations. He has supervised three HDR (2 Phd+1 MRes) students to completion; two as primary supervisor. He has supervised to completion of one Master's (primary) and ten Honours students. Currently, he is co-supervising five PhD students. Several of the students have obtained awards or high distinction for their theses.

He coordinates two Master’s level subjects, Statistical Methods in Epidemiology during the spring semester, and Epidemiology of Climate Change during the autumn semester. He also coordinates a WesternX Microcredential short course Commonly Used Biostatistical Methods for Longitudinal Data Analysis in Health, and workshops on longitudinal statistical methods at THRI and GRS. He also coordinated Environmental Epidemiology and introductory Biostatistics for Foundations of Medicine 2.

He has an independent research program investigating links between infant feeding factors/physical activity and childhood obesity and growth factors, nutritional epidemiology, eating disorders and body image, life expectancy and cost benefits associated with smoking reductions due to targeting of high-risk groups versus the population. Previously, he obtained research funding from CSIRO preventative health flagship, Medibank Private Limited and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. He has expertise in designing studies and performing power analysis, e.g., single, multi-centred individual and cluster randomized trials, cross-over trials, cohort, case-control, interrupted time series, repeated cross-sectional, prevalence and multiple baseline studies. He has 32 refereed conference papers/presentations.
