Biography

Dr Chong Han is a lecturer at the School of Humanities & Communication Arts, University of Western Sydney. She received PhD in Linguistics and MA in Cross-Cultural Communication (with merit) from the University of Sydney. She is also a NAATI accredited professional Mandarin Chinese/English translator and interpreter.

Her primary research interests are in the areas of media discourse analysis, pragmatics, cross-cultural communication and translation & interpreting. Her publications appear in Journal of Pragmatics, Translation & Interpreting and other high quality book and journals. She has received both internal and external scholarship and grants for her teaching and research projects. Her current research focus is on language and identity on social media.

Her teaching areas include linguistics, translation & interpreting and Chinese language.

My research aims to contribute to a new and emerging area of research in the aspect of linguistics, media and cultural studies. By conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis of large amounts of texts or corpora, I have been working on identifying language patterns in Chinese media communication and their meanings in contemporary China.

My current research focus is on language and Chineseness on social media. I am particularly interested in investigating how overseas Chinese students and young professionals use their language resources to construct their identities on popular social media platforms such as Weibo.
