What Should I Be Doing for My Career in Research? Preparing for the Job Market Post-Submission and Graduation

Navigating
the job market can be a complicated process for freshly graduated PhDs.
This workshop will assist you in deciding what sort of career
path to aim for as well as how to develop a 'Plan B'. The workshop
will also include a practical session on developing a CV for both the
academic and non-academic market.
This workshop will include:
- Discussions about different career pathways: academia, industry, government, not-for-profit
- An overview of each of these pathways and their pros and cons
- Resources (books, websites, blogs) that can help with your job search and applications
- Timelines for different types of job applications and when to apply
- Tips for interpreting job ads and writing job applications
- How to write a CV for an academic and non-academic employer
Please bring a copy of your latest CV to this workshop as it will include a practical session on re-working your CV.
This
workshop will be facilitated by Dr Jennifer Cheng. In addition, a guest
speaker, Dr Heather Buchan, has been invited who will talk to you about
working in research outside academia. This will be an opportunity for
you to ask any questions you have.
All Western Sydney University PhD students welcome.
