Academic appointed to prestigious Academy of Social Sciences

Rowe

Professor David Rowe from the Institute of Culture and Society (ICS) has been elected a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA).

The Academy, established in 1971, promotes excellence and encourages outstanding achievement in the social sciences in Australia.  Fellows are elected by their peers for their distinguished achievements and exceptional contributions made to the social sciences across 18 disciplines.

David, who is in the discipline of Sociology, joins three other ICS members in ASSA – Professors Kay Anderson (Geography), Katherine Gibson (Geography) and Tim Rowse (History).

Professor Rowe is also a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (AAH), which was established by Royal Charter in 1969, and advances knowledge of, and the pursuit of excellence in the humanities in Australia for the benefit of the nation.

Its elected fellows are leaders and experts in 11 broad disciplinary groups which share a common and central concern with human behaviour and culture.

David is a Fellow in the Cultural and Communication Studies Section, which is headed by ICS's Professor Tony Bennett (who is also a Fellow of the UK's Academy of Social Sciences).  The other ICS Fellows in the Cultural and Communication Studies Section are Professors Ien Ang, Gay Hawkins and Bob Hodge, while Tim Rowse is a Fellow in the History Section.

Western Sydney University received the highest possible ranking of "5 - well above world standard" for Cultural Studies research in the most recent round of Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA).

This recognition, in addition to having so many members of learned academies, is a clear mark of ICS's high standing in the Australian and international research fields.
