Western Sydney Creative invites you to an exhibition celebrating 20 women artists connected to Western Sydney through work, study, family, or home.

Drawn from Western Sydney University’s Art Collection and loans from artists or their estate, Women (seen) celebrates 20 women artists connected to Western Sydney through work, study, family, or home.
With 10 percent of the nation’s population calling Western Sydney home, Western Sydney is Australia’s most culturally diverse region, providing fertile ground for creativity, rich with authentic storytelling, experimentation, and expression.
From 1986 – 2009 Western Sydney University, or as it was then known as the University Western Sydney played a critical role in the advancement of visual arts literacy and training in the region through the art school on the Nepean campus.
The legacy of the art school still resonates widely throughout the art sector today with an impressive list of student and staff alumnae working as professional artists, lecturers, and curators.
15 of the exhibiting artists in Women (seen) are part of the cohort of Western Sydney University’s alumnae across the study areas of visual arts, electronic arts, visual communications, and education.
As with legacy, lineage also features strongly within the exhibition. Ideas and processes connect artists to each other, with their influences and antecedents, permeating the artworks on display.
Women (seen) speaks of identity, community, and belonging. It celebrates what once was, and what is now.

Presentation: "Student Perspectives on Working with Staff to Develop Academic Literacy Resources" - Shivani Suresh will draw on her experiences working with staff across the university and explain how student-staff partnership can enhance program and resource development through co-creation and co-inquiry.

Bio: Dr And Pasley’s research involves co-designing trans-led sexuality education with trans secondary students in Aotearoa New Zealand. Their doctoral research explored trans secondary students’ educational worlds, which they are currently turning into a book. They are also co-editing a book on “Gender Un/Bound” with Professors Susanne Gannon and Jayne Osgood.
About the Seminar: This presentation is based on a forthcoming article that examines the way in which queer normativities produce hegemony within queer (incl. trans) communities, ironically undoing the purpose of queer dis/identification (Love, 2014). These dynamics are traced back to the coloniality of gender (Lugones, 2007), which form the basis of the binary gender/sex/sexuality paradigms that queerness is designed to resist, then explores how reterritorialization strategies have tended to foster homo- (Duggan, 2002) and transnormativities (Vipond, 2015). This dynamic is also perpetuated by the epistemologies of (postHegelian) recognition that underpin engagements with queer performativity (Stark, 2014; cf. Butler, 1990). Like colonial notions of blood quantum, designed to undermine those who are disqualified by colonialities of power (Quijano, 2000; Jackson, 2020), the concept of a queer quantum emerges, whereby ‘belonging’ is rendered conditional on adequate queer performativity. Those who cannot or refuse to abide by queer normativities become subject to the lateral violence of reterritorialization. Rather than try to reterritorialize queer norms (again), this work employs agential realism (Barad, 2007) to diffract Māori responses to blood quantum with queer notions of chosen family (Weston, 1997) and crip ancestorship (Milbern, 2019) to disrupt the deployment of queer quanta.

A one-day hackathon challenge where Western students work in interdisciplinary teams to explore a real-life problem and create real-world solutions.
The upcoming Venture Makers Innovation Challenge held on 23 April 2024 will see interdisciplinary teams explore a real-life problem to come up with an innovative solution.
In this ONE DAY challenge, teams will work with participants from various disciplines (from Business, Communications, ICT, to Health, Psychology and others), to explore how we could use technology/digital tools in education to ensure fair access, participation, and success for all learners.
Working in interdisciplinary teams which you’ll be placed in on the day of the challenge, participants will propose new ideas and solutions in response to the challenge question:
The Challenge Question
“How do we disrupt education to make it more accessible and engaging?"
Ideas and solutions could include; technologies, startup companies, campaigns, policies and regulations, education programs or other ideas to address the challenges sub-themes:
- Equity & Participation
- Digital Technology
- Lifelong Learning
Participants will work with specialist mentors from startups and organisations to help them develop ideas that apply advanced technology concepts and innovative business models while working in a real-world environment. This is a transformational experience that will develop the skills to accelerate your career progression.

- Title: Knowing your place: The role of occupational status in fathers’ flexible working
Presentation Summary
Dr Alina Ewald will be providing an overview of her research on how white-collar working fathers navigate the work-family nexus, and how they construct, experience, and negotiate flexible working arrangements to fulfill their caregiving responsibilities. The presentation will specifically focus on the influence of occupational status – that is, where a person’s work role sits in the organisational hierarchy - on a father’s ability to engage with flexible working. The presentation will outline how constructions that stem from socio-moral, economic, organisational, and sociocultural contexts, operate to shape and constrain men’s choices and practices in relation to navigating paid work and parenting. Alina will discuss the implications of her research findings for men’s ability to balance paid work and fathering.
Biography:
Alina is a fathering and work-family scholar, she completed her PhD in Psychology at Western Sydney University in early 2022. Her research explores fathering identities, fathering practices, and fatherhood models, and examines the organisational and societal acceptance of men modifying their paid work for caregiving purposes. Alina’s research focuses on investigating the impact of flexible working arrangements in employee’s achieving work-family balance and work-life balance, and she explores the intricate power dynamics that influence perceptions and experiences of workplace practices and policies more broadly.

Join us for our Women (seen) lunchtime talk, Intercultural Sister Kin-a talk with Marian Abboud and Vicki Van Hout.
Marian is a Western Sydney based socially engaged artist of Lebanese heritage who graduated from the University of Western Sydney with a Bachelor of Visual Communication. She is passionate about creating meaning across perceived borders of place, language, and identity. She has exhibited extensively locally and nationally and has collaborated on many dance and performance-based projects including Volume at the AGNSW, Mona Foma in Hobart, 24 Frames, Carriageworks, and her recent performance, Not Her Reflection, a travelling performance at Artspace. FCMG, Granville Art Centre, Pari and UTS Library.
Vicki Van Hout’s First Nations heritage hails from Wiradjuri country in far Western NSW and she has Dutch, English and Afghan roots as well. Vicki has dedicated her career to Indigenous arts practice as a graduate of NAISDA, Australia ‘s premier Indigenous Dance College. Vicki returned from New York after graduating from Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance NYC to dance with both leading Aboriginal dance companies Bangarra Dance Theatre and AIDT. Vicki has won the prestigious Australia Council For The Arts Dance Awards and is the current recipient of Creating Australia's Dance Fellowship.
Marian Abboud and Vicki Van Hout's careers crossed paths as part of a speed dating event pairing multiple dancers with visual artists to then make a pitch to the joint organisers Parramatta Artists Studios and FORM Dance Projects (then known as Western Sydney Dance Action). They won with a work titled Behind The Zig Zag.
Approximately fifteen years later Abboud and Van Hout have maintained their collaborative partnership which can be distilled as a continuing cultural exploration examining the ways Abboud's Lebanese and Van Hout's Indigenous heritages intersect including paradigms surrounding temporality, being, belief and magic.
Their talk will focus on the way they navigate kinship structures, more specifically Marian’s inclusion of her immediate family in the process of her solo, and their combined image making.

Masculinity, Backlash and Antifeminism - Dr Lucy Nicholas
How can we understand the resurgence of masculinism in Australia and elsewhere? How can we challenge antifeminism and the increase in misogyny?

How can we understand the resurgence of masculinism in Australia and elsewhere? How can we challenge antifeminism and the increase in misogyny?
Lucy Nicholas will discuss the changes in contemporary masculinity and the worrying public resurgence of reactionary misogyny, especially online, and how we can use academic ideas to make sense of them. They will consider the emotional and ideological drivers of these ideas, some of the impacts they have, and how they may be challenged.
With a diverse academic background, Dr Nicholas received their PhD from the University of Edinburgh before embarking on a career that has taken them from the University of Portsmouth to their current position in Australia. Throughout their journey, they have demonstrated a passion for teaching, covering a wide range of subjects including sociology, social and political theory, gender and sexualities, and academic skills.
Dr Nicholas is the author of two influential books and their first book, “Queer Post-Gender Ethics,” published by Palgrave McMillan in 2014, explores the intersections of gender, sexuality, and ethics. Their second book, “The Persistence of Global Masculinism,” co-authored with Chris Agius, was published in 2018, shedding light on the complex dynamics of masculinity in a global context.
Lucy is currently working on two streams of research: one on sexuality and gender diversity, and one on men, masculinity, and violence prevention. With their expertise and commitment to advancing knowledge in gender and sexuality studies, Dr Lucy Nicholas continues to make significant contributions to academia and beyond.

As a Western Sydney University researcher or HDR Candidate, is important to understand your responsibilities around the management of your research data.
Western’s Research Data Management Policy requires all researchers and HDR candidates to develop a Research Data Management Plan (RDMP) prior to starting research at the University.
A RDMP will help you think proactively about your project and the data that will be produced, including how it will be collected, organised, managed, stored, preserved, shared and possibly published during and after your research project.
