Study Abroad

Spend a semester or a year studying in Sydney

Western Sydney University provides you with an opportunity to experience the Australian way of life while contributing to your home university degree. 

Study Abroad programs are for students from home universities that may or may not have an active exchange agreement with Western Sydney University (tuition fees apply). You can choose to study one of the following:

  • Study Abroad: 1 Session Program (semester) or
  • Study Abroad: 2 Session Program (year-long)

Student Exchange programs are also available for nominated students from home universities with an active exchange agreement with Western Sydney University. You can choose to study one of the following:

  • Exchange: 1 Session Program (semester) or
  • Exchange: 2 Session Program (year-long)

Sydney Graduate School of Business (SGSM) Academic Calendar 2022

Only Postgraduate Business programs are available for Postgraduate students at SGSM. Students study two subjects per Quarter (equivalent to a full study load) and combine two Quarters in order to complete the equivalent of a semester load.

Recognised English Proficiency Tests/ Certification and required scores

If English is not your first language and you have not been studying in English at the tertiary level, you will need to include a recognised English test with your application. The evidence of English proficiency is valid for a period of two years from the date of the test or the date of the completion of studies.

  • IELTS Academic: Overall score of 6.5, with a minimum score of 6.0 in all bands
  • TOEFL iBT: Total score 82, Writing 21, Speaking 18, Reading 13, Listening 13  
  • Pearsons Test of English (PTE) Academic: Overall score of 58 with no communicative skill score less than 50
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English: Cambridge English level B2, overall score 176, no section less than 169
  • Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): A statement on partner's letterhead, signed by a staff member of authority of the partner's English language centre, declaring that the applicant has been evaluated to have a CEFR level of B2 or above.
  • European senior secondary school qualifications:
    • Denmark Studentereksamen: Minimum score of 7 in English A or 9 in English B
    • Finland Upper Secondary School Certificate: Minimum score of 8 in English A or English (Advanced)
    • Germany Abitur: Minimum score of 3 (7-9)/Satisfactory in Advanced Level English
    • Germany DAAD: Minimum score of B in all 4 categories of the DAAD certificate (old) or B2 in each category of the DAAD certificate (new)
    • Netherlands Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs (VWO): Minimum score of 7 in final year English
    • Norway Vitnemal: Minimum score of 4 in English
    • Sweden Slutbetyg: Minimum score of 4/VG in English A or B (old system) or Minimum score of C in English 5 or 6 (new system)

For additional tests or certifications equivalent to IELTS (overall score of 6.5 with minimum score of 6 in all bands) accepted by Western Sydney University, refer to the approved English language entry requirements.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

In order to receive your Australian student visa, it is mandatory that you purchase Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

Please select the appropriate option for you when you are applying:

  • if you would like Western Sydney University to organise your compulsory OSHC with our nominated provider Bupa, for which you will pay the nominated fee indicated in your offer letter as part of your offer acceptance process; or
  • if you wish to organise your own OSHC. If you wish to organise this yourself, you MUST purchase it through one of the Australian Government-endorsed providers

Once the above documents are received the application can be processed.

Receiving your Offer

Subject to your application being successful, we will send an Offer Letter along with an Offer Pack.

An Offer Letter for:

  • Exchange students will be forwarded to you, and copied to your home university
  • Study Abroad students will be sent directly to you or via your agent (if you have one)

Accepting your Offer

To accept the Offer you will need to upload/complete the following via your online application

  • Signed Acceptance Form (which is a 2-page form, included in your offer)
  • Payment (if applicable - and to be made electronically)
  • Proof you have obtained correct Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), if you have elected to purchase this yourself and not via Western Sydney University

Receiving your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE)

Once you have correctly accepted your Offer, we will issue your eCoE. This is the required document to apply for your Australian student visa (subclass 500).

Please note, you cannot apply for your Australian student visa until you have your eCoE.

Preparing for arrival

Once you have accepted your Offer and received your eCoE, you can start making preparations to study at Western Sydney University, including applying for your Australian student visa (subclass 500).
